The rapid rise of chronic, noncommunicable diseases represents one of the major health challenges to global development. The principle chronic diseases are: stroke, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases. Chronic diseases currently account for some 60% of global deaths and almost one third of the global burden of disease.
