Prevention best approach to heart disease

 

 
 
This column is the introduction to a comprehensive series on cardiovascular disease, which is a leading cause of mortality in our province and was responsible for 21.6 per cent of all deaths in 2009.
For all diseases of the heart combined, the age standardized mortality rate in 2009 was 126.1 per 100,000 population in Saskatchewan when the national average was 111 per 100,000 population. In Canada, there was an astounding 17 million visits to a physician (including repeat visits) for treatment of high blood pressure in 2001 alone, despite having a population of only 30 million at the time./.../
