BMJ and NCDs

What's New Online - 24 August

Dear Prof Aloyzio Achutti,
In September, world leaders will meet at the United Nations in New York to discuss Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The focus will be on four leading conditions - heart disease, cancer, diabetes and respiratory disease which together cause more than half of all deaths in low and middle income countries.

David Stuckler and colleagues
warn that there has so far been no clear international response to these diseases and that the meeting will be a battleground, pitting public interests against powerful, private ones.

Deborah Cohen reports on the politics and influences behind this story and asks whether industry interests are trumping evidence based public health interventions and if anything valuable will be agreed.

Please let us know what you think by submitting a response to either of the articles. We look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Fiona Godlee

Editor in Chief, BMJ
