Washington, D.C. – Seventeen leading medical specialty societies have identified specific tests, procedures or medication therapies they say are commonly ordered, but which are not always necessary—and could cause undue harm. To date, more than 130 tests and procedures to question have been released as part of the ABIM Foundation’s Choosing Wisely® campaign, which aims to spark conversations between patients and physicians about what care is really necessary.
Each specialty society participating in Choosing Wisely identified five specific tests or procedures that are commonly done in their profession, but whose use should be questioned. In April 2012, nine medical specialty societies each released Choosing Wisely lists.
The new lists, to be released Thursday at a Washington, D.C., press conference, include recommendations such as:/.../

Several years ago, I began to learn about what I would come to regard as one of the great crimes in human history, wherebymillions of people in Africa and elsewhere were cynically allowed to die of Aids, while western governments and pharmaceutical companies blocked access to available low-cost medication. The outrage I felt as I discovered the details of this story was exceeded only by a deep sense of betrayal mixed with shame for not having known more about it in the first place.

Acaba de ser lançado levantamento tido como o mais amplo estudo da história para descrever as causas e a distribuição de doenças, traumas e fatores de risco do mundo. Isso (obviamente) é bom. E isso se mostrou (inesperadamente) ruim.
O chamado GBD 2010 (que poderia ser traduzido, do inglês, como Estudo do Ônus Global das Doenças) chegou causando impacto. Seus defensores alegam, com entusiasmo rotundo, que não há nada semelhante – nem de perto – em abrangência e profundidade na área de epidemiologia. Já os que se sentiram desconfortáveis com o oceano de dados apresentados alegam que os autores não primaram pela transparência. Pior: os números do estudo vão de encontro a outros – bem aceitos –, vindos, por exemplo, da Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS)./.../

Switzerland, more than a year after igniting the occupy Wall Streetmovement in the U.S. The outrage over corporate greed reached a boiling point last week with the news that Daniel Vasella, chairman of the Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis, was offered a $78 million payout to ensure he would not work for a rival company after his retirement on Feb. 22.
The announcement sparked a public outcry rarely seen in this usually placid country. Politicians and unions called the compensation “disgusting,” while an attorney representing small shareholders filed a lawsuit accusing Novartis and Vasella of the misuse of company funds. Faced with the mounting criticism, this week Vasella — who reportedly earned $14 million last year — announced he would forgo the payment because “many people find the amount unreasonably high.”/.../
