Dear Colleague

This is just to draw your attention to the two significant papers on Inclusion Health published in The Lancet today, and the guest editorial from Professor Sir Michael Marmot.  The papers are the result of five years work and wide international collaborations brought together by Pathway and the Faculty for Homeless and Inclusion Health.  We think they mark the arrival of 'Inclusion Health’ - a systematic concern with the health causes and consequences of severe exclusion.
Pathway’s summary press release on the work is here http://www.pathway.org.uk/societys-excluded-people-ten-times-likely-die-early/

Paper one calculates robust and internationally valid standardised mortality ratios for multiply excluded groups in developed world countries. 7.9 for men and 11.0 for women. Extremely high and far higher than SMRs for other conditions that have led to major health service responses.
Paper two gathers together robust evidence of what works for the population. It is a meta review and shows there is a huge amount than can (and should) be done.
Michael Marmot’s editorial further challenges us not only to respond to today’s distress, but to do all we can to focus attention on the 'causes of the causes.’

We have written to the DH, NHS England and other health ‘system leaders’ asking for their response.

Please share the papers with colleagues, raise them with collaborators, and comment more widely if you have time or opportunity.

The Observer ran a good piece on them today here:
