Human Development 2018

Human Development Today

October 2018 Newsletter
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) released two important measures of global development this past month ahead of the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly: the Human Development Index (HDI) and the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). Together they paint a broader picture of the world today – a picture that goes beyond purely monetary measures and focuses on people’s choices and opportunities.

Disparities between and within countries continue to stifle progress

Children born today in a very high human development country can expect to live 19 years longer and spend seven more years in school than those living in the group of low human development countries according to the latest Human Development Index, included in the Human Development Indices and Indicators: 2018 Statistical Update. To mark this release, Journalist Femi Oke, UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner and Selim Jahan, Director of the Human Development Report Office, gave an overview of the state of human development – snapshots of current conditions as well as long-term trends on progress, inequality, gender gaps and the environment.
