Placenta

Research in mice draws attention to the importance of the often-overlooked organ

TREE OF LIFE  The placenta is a fetus’s lifeline throughout pregnancy. Some problems with embryo development may actually have roots in the placenta, recent research in mice suggests.
I am not the first person who has considered composing poetry to the placenta. One writer begins: “Oh Lady Placenta! What a life you lived in magenta.” Another almost coos to the “constant companion, womb pillow friend.” It might sound like odd inspiration for verse, but it’s entirely justified.
This vital organ, which is fully formed by about 12 weeks, nurtures a growing fetus throughout pregnancy, offering oxygen, nutrients and antibodies and eliminating waste. The placental cells forge a deep connection between mom and baby, a symbolic early step in a lifelong bond./.../

The Great Ditactor

Charlie Chaplin’s Speech in The Great Dictator: A Call for Decency, a Statement Against Fascism

When we featured this famous scene on OC five years ago, Sheerly Avni wrote: "Charlie Chaplin is said to have added his 4 1/2 minute final speech to The Great Dictator (1940) only after Hitler’s invasion of France. The speech both showcases the actor’s considerable dramatic gifts and makes a prescient, eloquent plea for human decency." According to the biography, Charlie Chaplin and His Times, "the speech was [indeed] recorded in the Chaplin Studio on June 24, 1940, precisely one week after the fall of France," when "only Britain stood between Hitler and total victory in the west." As America resisted getting entangled in a European conflict, Chaplin felt the need to speak out against fascism. He spoke the following lines. They were timely then in Europe. They're timely now in America. And they'll be timely somewhere else in the future, that you can unfortunately guarantee.

Dear Colleagues,

*** Sorry for cross-posting. Please distribute widely ***

In collaboration with the journals Frontiers in Sociology & Frontiers in Public Health (www.frontiersin.org) we are bringing together a selected group of international experts to contribute to an open-access article collection on:
"Perspectives and Theories of Social Innovation for Ageing Population"

Guest Editors:
Andrzej Klimczuk, Warsaw School of Economics, Warsaw, Poland
Łukaz Tomczyk, Pedagogical University of Kraków, Kraków, Poland

The abstract submission deadline is 27 June 2018.
The manuscript submission deadline is 24 October 2018.

Visit the collection homepage for the full description of the project: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/8000

About this Research Topic:
In recent years we may observe increasing interest in the development of social innovation both regarding theory as well as the practice of responding to social problems and challenges. One of the crucial challenges at the beginning of the 21st century is population ageing. Various new and innovative initiatives, programs, schemes, and projects to respond to negative consequences of this demographic process are emerging around the world. However, social theories related to ageing are still insufficiently combined with these new practices, social movements, organisational models, and institutions. Many scholars are still using notions and tools from classical theories of social gerontology or the sociology of ageing such as disengagement theory, activity theory, and successful and productive ageing. Such theories do not sufficiently explain ageing in the context of, for example, a broad use of the information and communications technologies (ICTs) including robotics and automation, new healthcare and long-term care models, advancements in the development and governance of age-friendly environments, and public engagement of older adults into co-production of services delivered by public, private, non-governmental as well as non-formal entities.

In this Research Topic we welcome papers critically evaluating the existing social perspectives and theories in the field of ageing, introducing innovative approaches and comparative studies. We welcome researchers from areas such as sociology, pedagogy, public policy, economics, management, and public health. The contributions can be based on theoretical studies as well as the implementation of social innovation and programs addressed at ageing and older people. Reviews and papers on philosophical and ethical issues are also welcome.

Keywords: ageing, aging, older adults, older people, social gerontology, sociology of aging, sociology of ageing, ICT, robotics, social innovation, care, caregivers, agefriendly, public health, long-term care, healthcare, governance, NGOs

Dementia: Immune and Endocrine System

Dementia and the immune system It seems that immune cells in the brain known as microglia might be sowing the seeds for the protein plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease. [image: The Economist] Our cover this week argues that a basic level of* universal health care* is sensible, affordable and practical—including in poor countries. Over half the world goes without essential care; those who get to see a doctor often receive rotten treatment. Universal care would bring broad social benefits, including to the economy. Countries such as Costa Rica and Chile, which spend a fraction of what the United States does and yet enjoy a similar life expectancy, demonstrate the scale of the opportunity Zanny Minton Beddoes, Editor-in-Chief
