In the study, IHME researchers found that for a person previously infected with COVID, protection against severe disease remained high at 40 weeks after infection – over 88% – for the ancestral, Alpha, Delta, and Omicron BA.1 variants. - Protection against reinfection: Meanwhile, the protection from reinfection from ancestral, Alpha, and Delta variants was 79% at 40 weeks. By contrast, the protection against reinfection by the Omicron BA.1 variant was substantially lower at 36%.
- Vaccine-acquired immunity remains safest: Past COVID infection appears to be on par with two mRNA vaccine doses for protection against reinfection, symptomatic disease, and severe disease for the four aforementioned variants, though “vaccinations are still the safest way to acquire immunity against COVID-19,” said Dr. Stephen Lim, IHME professor and lead author of the study.

Dodo Redo
A biotech company wants to resurrect the dodo bird, reports Ewen Callaway for Nature. It plans to edit the genes of the bird’s closest living relative, the iridescent-feathered Nicobar pigeon, to match that of the dodo. Even if this method succeeds, however, researchers will only have produced a hybrid rather than a truly resurrected dodo.
