One World, One Home, One Heart

Slogan and key image 2011

With the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) taking place in September, World Heart Day presents a great opportunity to communicate messages about the meeting outcomes, and the importance of elevating NCDs up the global health agenda.

After two years of focusing on heart health in the workplace, this year we call on individuals to reduce their own and their family’s risk of heart disease and stroke. We ask people to take charge of their home’s heart health by taking steps such as choosing healthy food options, increasing physical activity, and saying no to tobacco.

As always, our emphasis will be on improving heart health across all nations.

State of the Heart’ CVD Report

State of the Heart’ CVD Report

Every year, 17.1 million lives are claimed by the global burden of heart disease and stroke - 82% of which are in the developing world . The number of deaths – especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) – is alarming and saddening, particularly since through steps such as eating a healthy diet, regular physical activity and avoiding tobacco, the majority of these deaths could be prevented.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of World Heart Day the World Heart Federation, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Economic Forum (WEF), is launching the ‘State of the Heart’ CVD Report.
  • The World Heart Federation has initiated this report – the first of its kind – to reflect on the great achievements in cardiovascular disease (CVD) over the past decade, and raises awareness of the challenges still ahead of us in the fight against the number one killer worldwide.
  • The report also calls upon employers, healthcare professionals, policy-makers and other stakeholders to implement the necessary activities to fight the growing burden of CVD.

Work with Heart

From Alice: WHF
As World Heart Federation has worked within the World Economic Forum "Working Towards Wellness" initiative, we have worked to drive home the point that workplace prevention of CVD has to go beyond HG to include the factory workers in China, Malaysia and India....a point about diversity and inclusion that we tried to get in the imagery of the World Heart Day clip.

http://www.world-heart-federation.org/what-we-do/world-heart-day/work-with-heart-video

For World Heart Day this year we have collected examples of CVD prevention in different types of settings and will be presenting them in our online newsletter, Heartbeat. One of the themes that comes out strongly is the need to extend efforts to the "informal" work settings.

Since the workplace will also be the WHD theme next year, we hope this will stimulate people to send us information on different kinds of workplace interventions throughout the year, particularly those that are adapted to workplaces in low-income settings. So please keep us informed!

World Heart Day

From:

World Heart Federation

Dear Aloyzio ,

The World Heart Federation has, for the first time, created a video clip to promote this year’s World Heart Day message, which will be disseminated through social media networks such as YouTube and Facebook:

View the video

A recent article in the European Financial Times reported that more than 80% of the largest US advertisers are using Facebook to promote themselves. Hence the video was prepared to join this growing trend. We see this as a fun and entertaining way to call on people to “Work with Heart”.

With this communication tool, we aim to enter - with your help - a new level of communication in our ninth year of celebrating World Heart Day. Be amongst the first to watch this video and learn how you can adapt and use it to reach the online community as part of your World Heart Day activities.

What you can do

  • Please send the link to your members, employees, friends and families and post on your websites
  • Join our Facebook group

Thank you as always, for your continued support in making World Heart Day the largest global awareness campaign on heart disease and stroke.

Good luck to those of your organizing activities and we wish you every success with your local campaigns.

Best wishes,

Helen Alderson
Chief Executive Officer

World Heart Day 2007, September 30.

World Heart Day

Date: 30 September 2007 Place: Worldwide
Cardio-vascular diseases - including heart attacks and strokes - are the world’s largest killer, claiming 17.5 million lives a year. World Heart Day was established to create public awareness of risk factors for heart diseases and stroke and to promote prevention.
There are 155 million overweight and obese children globally. Parents can influence and help children in reducing major risk factors for heart diseases and stroke - such as controlling weight by healthy eating and doing regular physical activity. That is why this year’s World Heart Day focuses on the theme “Team Up for Healthy Hearts”.
In partnership with WHO, the World Heart Federation is organizing activities in more than 100 countries. The activities will include health checks, organized walks, runs and fitness sessions, public talks, stage shows, scientific forums, exhibitions, concerts, carnivals, and sports tournaments.
