Vienna, Austria - German scientists have for the first time identified a genetic link between periodontitis and coronary heart disease (CHD), two conditions characterized by a chronic inflammatory process [1]. Dr Arne Schaefer (Univeristy of Kiel, Germany) presented the findings of his study last week at the European Society of Human Genetics meeting.
He explained that an association between the dental disease and CHD has been known for many years, with evidence of an epidemiological relationship between the two, and many shared risk factors, such as smoking, diabetes, and obesity. But until now, a genetic link was suspected but not proven./.../
