Sigmund Freud

Austrian psychoanalyst

Sigmund Freud, (born May 6, 1856, Freiberg, Moravia, Austrian Empire [now Příbor, Czech Republic]—died September 23, 1939, London, England), Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysisFreud’s article on psychoanalysis appeared in the 13th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica.

Freud may justly be called the most influential intellectual legislator of his age. His creation of psychoanalysis was at once a theory of the human psyche, a therapy for the relief of its ills, and an optic for the interpretation of culture and society. Despite repeated criticisms, attempted refutations, and qualifications of Freud’s work, its spell remained powerful well after his death and in fields far removed from psychology as it is narrowly defined. If, as the American sociologist Philip Rieff once contended, “psychological man” replaced such earlier notions as political, religious, or economic man as the 20th century’s dominant self-image, it is in no small measure due to the power of Freud’s vision and the seeming inexhaustibility of the intellectual legacy he left behind./.../

In Test Tubes, RNA Molecules Evolve Into a Tiny Ecosystem

By YASEMIN SAPLAKOGLU

When researchers gave a genetic molecule the ability to replicate, it evolved over time into a complex network of “hosts” and “parasites” that both competed and cooperated to survive.

Physicists Pin Down How Quantum Uncertainty Sharpens Measurements

By BEN BRUBAKER

Throwing out data seems to make measurements of distances and angles more precise. The reason why has been traced to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle.

Beaming With Excitement
A long-awaited accelerator came online this week, reports Nature. The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams will study rare, neutron-rich isotopes that are produced during events like neutron star collisions. Studying the nuclear physics of various isotopes can also help us learn about the Big Bang. In 2020 Thomas Lewton wrote for Quanta about how measuring the fusion rate of deuterium to helium-3 helped reveal key details about the first moments of the universe.

Monkey Business
A new hybrid species of monkey was found in Borneo, reports Patrick Pester for Live Science. Unlike other hybrids that are sterile (like mules), these monkeys appear to be able to reproduce. Hybridization was long assumed to be an evolutionary dead-end. But in 2019 Jonathan Lambert reported for Quanta on a new study that suggested it could actually be a shortcut to speciation.
