Minha irmã, comemoramos seus 92 anos no último dia 03 de setembro. Conseguimos reunir a família a modo como se fazia com frequência enquanto a Valderês estava viva, e gostava do encontro.
Farmacêutica (como o pai Bortolo) Bióloga, Doutora (USP) em Botânica, entre outras, professora das primeiras turmas da Faculdade Federal de Medicina de Santa Maria.
Dei uma volta pelo nosso jardim interno e colhi vinte espécies de flores que já estão se antecipando e anunciando a primavera (foto feita por Leda de Lima, cuidadora de minha irmã).

In 2016, in celebration of the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, more than 150 different outfits were displayed in an exhibition entitled “Fashioning a Reign.” Though it is estimated that Queen Elizabeth II attended approximately 25,000 royal engagements and owned about 10,000 unique outfits for such occasions, the exhibit focused on a smaller number of outfits, featured in three locations—in Scotland at The Palace of Holyroodhouse and in England at both Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace where the flagship exhibit is held.

As we look to larger cosmic scales, we get a broader view of the expansive cosmic forest, eventually revealing the grandest views of all.
We are living in uncertain times. The COVID-19 pandemic, now in its third year, continues to spin off new variants. Ongoing conflicts and crises across the world are causing immense human suffering, while climate and ecological disasters threaten the world daily.
So where do we go from here so that people can thrive today and in the future? What is standing in the way of us acting together to address shared challenges? The newly released 2021/22 Human DevelopmentReport (HDR), “Uncertain Times, Unsettled Lives: Shaping our Future in a Transforming World,” seeks to address these questions.
The 2021/22 HDR shows that for the first time in the 32 years that UNDP have been calculating it, the Human Development Index, which measures a nation’s health, education, and standard of living, has declined globally for two years in a row. Human development has fallen back to its 2016 levels, reversing much of the progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
Uncertainty is not new, but its dimensions are taking ominous new forms today. A new “uncertainty complex” is emerging, never before seen in human history, says the report.
However, the report ultimately argues that there is peril in new uncertainties but also promise—an opportunity to reimagine our futures, to renew and adapt our institutions and to craft new stories about who we are and what we value.
New Approvals for Inhaled Vaccines India and China have approved new Covid-19 vaccines that can be inhaled to give the linings of the airways “mucosal immunity,” reports Jessica Hamzelou for MIT Technology Review. The new vaccines bolster the body’s first line of defense against airborne viruses, the mucosal surfaces. The Resilient Brain Born without a left temporal lobe in her brain, Helen Santoro developed normal language processing abilities and went on as an adult to become a writer. She describes her experience and the mysteries of neural plasticity in an article for The New York Times. Brains can sometimes adapt to injuries and harmful experiences in remarkable ways. A 2020 book excerpt in Quanta by the late neuroscientist Richard Masland described how the visual cortex of blind people can stay active as a processing center for the other senses. Neurons are impressively plastic, but rigid structures called perineuronal nets (PNNs) can prevent certain connections from growing. The neuroscientist R. Douglas Fields wrote for Quanta in July about research that reveals the role of PNNs in suppressing pain.

#A propósito de Centenários
No dia sete de setembro celebramos o o Segundo Centenário da Independência. A imagem que segue tem também cem anos, e corresponde à silhueta de nosso pai Bortolo Achutti (*28/10/1898 +19/11/1977) feita por um artista ambulante no Rio de Janeiro, com papel preto e tesourinha (silhueta) em 1922, quando ele ainda não havia completado 24 anos. Foi por ocasião das festividades comemorativas do Primeiro Centenário da Independência, na Capital da República (na época ainda era o Rio de Janeiro). Ele fora convidado, e viajou de navio, para participar do desfile comemorativo, como Campeão Nacional de Tiro ao Alvo, depois de consagrado como campeão Gaúcho.
Enquanto esperava num restaurante a beira mar, como gostava muito de imagens, aceitou a proposta do artista, que aqui aproveito para reproduzir.
Minha irmã, Professora Maria Helena Cechella Achutti, estava relendo a tese de Mestrado (abril/1996), do sobrinho Professor do Instituto de Artes da UFRGS, Luiz Eduardo Robinson Achutti, e me chamou atenção sobre a página 11, onde ele se refere à técnica e arte do recorte de silhuetas como precursora da fotografia.
Na sequência dos Centenários, lembrei-me também de um texto que escrevi em 28/10/1998, por ocasião do centenário de nascimento de nosso pai, que coincidia com o centenário da fundação de nossa Faculdade de Medicina, na qual me formei quando ambos (Ele e a Faculdade) completavam sessenta anos.
Bom dia Aloyzio! Com relação ao PNUD, embora não muito conhecido, me foi muito útil em minhas missão para a OIT, nos países africanos de língua portuguesa. E sempre fico muito emocionado quando você posta sue comentários sobre a Valderês assim como pela demonstração de afeto pelos seus familiares.
