Alternative Title: Steven Arthur Pinker

Steven Pinker, in full Steven Arthur Pinker, (born September 18, 1954, Montreal, Quebec, Canada), Canadian-born American psychologist who advocated evolutionary explanations for the functions of the brain and thus for language and behaviour.

Pinker was raised in a largely Jewish neighbourhood of Montreal. He studied cognitive science at McGill University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1976. He earned a doctorate in experimental psychology at Harvard University in 1979. After stints as an assistant professor at Harvard (1980–81) and at Stanford University (1981–82), he joined the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). There he served as codirector of the Center of Cognitive Science (1985–94) and, having been made full professor in 1989, as director of the McDonnell-Pew Center for Cognitive Neuroscience (1994–99). Pinker returned to Harvard in 2003 as a full professor.

Dear Aloyzio

Of course, I remember Sérgio very well.  If you saw my note to Cesar Victora, you will know how much I liked him.

I have shown a slide that I got from S érgio on the social gradient in cardiovascular mortality in Porto
Alegre countless times.

Maria Inez Azabuja kindly wrote to me to say she would share my condolences with his family.
Amyloidosis must have been a most uncomfortable condition to deal with.

Best wishes

Michael

“More Lively Counterfaits”: Experimental Imaging at the Birth of Modern Science

From infographics to digital renders, today's scientists have ready access to a wide array of techniques to help visually communicate their research. It wasn't always so. Gregorio Astengo explores the innovations employed in early issues of the Royal Society's *Philosophical Transactions*, the world's first scientific journal — new forms of image making which pushed the boundaries of 17th-century book printing.

SIGSALY

the first wireless phone -- 09/17/20

Today's encore selection -- from Fortune's Formula by William Poundstone. During World War II, a British-American team that included Claude Shannon and Alan Turing created the first digitally scrambled, wireless phone known as SIGSALY:

"Declassified only in 1976, it was a joint effort of Bell Labs and Britain's Government Code and Cipher School at Bletchley Park, north of London. It had a scientific pedigree rivaling that of the Manhattan Project, for the British-American team included not only Shannon but also Alan Turing. They were building a system known as SIGSALY. That was not an acronym, just a random string of letters to confuse the Germans, should they learn of it./.../
