ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 22 -- The smoking-cessation drug varenicline (Chantix) has been associated with 1,001 serious adverse events -- including 50 deaths -- during the first quarter of 2008, a drug-safety watchdog group said today. The Institute for Safe Medication Practices said that total put varenicline at the top of its list of drugs associated with serious injuries during the quarter. Heparin was second. The institute's drug-safety watchers include Curt D. Furberg, M.D., Ph.D., of Wake Forest. |
