Creating a Google Map of the brain with David Van Essen
David Van Essen, Edison professor of neurobiology and department head of anatomy and neurobiology, Washington University in St. Louis, develops and uses computerized brain mapping techniques to study the structure, function, and development of cerebral cortex in humans and nonhuman primates. Van Essen also worked on the Human Connectome Project, a 5-year project to map human brain circuitry in healthy adults. Now with the BRAIN Initiative, Van Essen believes we will further understand how healthy brains work and how to better treat people affected with a wide range of diseases. As Google Earth has transformed how we see the planet, similary, so will a map of the brain, Van Essen contends.
