Cuckoos are masters of deception. When it comes to raising their young, these birds don’t need to build a nest, protect their eggs or feed their offspring. Instead, female cuckoos pass these roles onto unsuspecting victims.
Cuckoos are brood parasites, meaning they don’t raise their own young. They lay their eggs in the nests of other bird species, according to the Max Planck Society in Germany, tricking other birds into thinking the cuckoo eggs are theirs. Some of the main targets for cuckoos include dunnocks (Prunella modularis), meadow pipits (Anthus pratensis) and reed warblers (Acrocephalus scirpaceus), researchers reported in 2009 in the journal Bird Study.

The universe's black holes are bigger than astrophysicists expected them to be. Now, a new study suggests why: Every single black hole may be growing as the universe expands.
The new hypothesis, called "cosmological coupling," argues that as the universe expands outward after the Big Bang, all objects with mass grow with it too. And black holes, as some of the most massive objects to exist, grow the most.
The German pathologist and politician Rudolf Virchow proposed the concept of sociomedical causation, emphasising the role of social and environmental factors in the aetiology and prevention of diseases. Virchow's achievements are threefold: he was a founder of scientific biomedicine, he characterised medicine as a social science as much as a biological science and he promoted and improved public health. In his landmark report of a typhus epidemic in mid-19th century Germany, Virchow drew a connection between the epidemic and poverty and living conditions./.../
Qubits are fussy and fragile. Useful quantum computers will need to use an error-correction technique like the one that was recently demonstrated on a real machine.
Hot dogs usually come in packs of 10 while buns come in packs of eight. How do you get those numbers to match if there’s already one leftover hot dog in the fridge?
Over the River and Through the Wormhole A new solution to Einstein’s equations of general relativity suggests that a particle’s voyage through a hypothetical wormhole needn’t be as catastrophic as was thought, Paul Sutter reports for LiveScience. Previous traversable wormhole solutions depended on nonexistent “negative energy.” In 2017, Natalie Wolchover reported for Quanta about a clever alternative: Instead of negative energy, use interactions between the two mouths of the wormhole to keep it open.
An Even Bigger Quantum Computer A new quantum computing platform hit a major milestone by making a 256-qubit quantum simulator, Siobhan Roberts reports for MIT Technology Review. Each qubit in the machine is a single atom levitated by a finely focused laser called an “optical tweezer.” Arthur Ashkin shared the 2018 Nobel Prize for developing this technology, as Natalie Wolchover and Michael Moyer reported at the time for Quanta. Comparing this platform to quantum computers like IBM’s recently announced Eagle isn’t straightforward — because quantum computing isn’t, either. In a column for Quanta earlier this year, computer scientist Scott Aaronson explained why.
#Exame AMRIGS
Examinadores e aplicado o primeiro exame.

O especialista, nascido no Rio Grande do Sul,
eternidade.
Aos familiares, amigos, pacientes e alunos nossas condolências.
