Update from the World Health Assembly, Geneva

Update from the World Health Assembly, Geneva

Hello everyone,
It has been an exciting few days here in Geneva. Modi and I have been representing you and the Young Professional Chronic Disease Network, attending key events, armed with fliers and some key messages from young people and young professionals.

Some highlights are as follows:

1. There is a real buzz here about the role for young people in building an NCD social movement. At a meeting held by the NCD Alliance and Lancet last night, Sir George Alleyne (a long standing NCD advocate) emphasized that young people are critical, they should be a key part of the movement, and and in direct reference to the NCD Action Network and YPCDN - that they are mobilizing from across the globe. A senior executive from the Pan American Health Organization spoke with us at length about the role of young people in the coming months. Some advice from him was i) make sure that each NCD Action Network member asks their head of state to attend the UN Summit in New York this September, and ii) to tell their head of state that if they do not attend, young people will not vote for them! Some advice we intend to follow.

2. We have had discussions with several other young persons and young professionals organizations to build an alliance and to promote a unified position statement in the build up to the UN Summit. Further updates to follow. This may substantially grow our advocacy efforts as a few of these organizations have literally millions of members.

3. Finally, many people we have spoken to have mentioned the NCD Action Network and the huge potential that we have to make a difference in the coming months.

We look forward to updating you again tomorrow.

~ Phillip
