Life-Years Lost to Cancer More than 150 Million
Worldwide, nearly 170 million years of healthy life were lost in 2008 because of cancer, researchers reported.
In the developing world, early death was the main impact of cancer, according to Isabelle Soerjomataram, MD, of the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, and colleagues.
But in the developed world, better prognosis and treatment led to a higher rate of years living with the after-effects of cancer, Soerjomataram and colleagues reported online in The Lancet.
Using population-based data -- most of it from cancer registries -- Soerjomataram and colleagues calculated rates of years of life lost and years lived with disability as a result of cancer.
They combined those figures to derive disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) lost for 184 countries in 12 world regions. The countries were grouped into four categories based on their development./.../
