How Einstein Thought
How Einstein Thought: Fostering Combinatorial Creativity and Unconscious Connections*by Maria Popova* *“Combinatory play seems to be the essential feature in productive thought.” * For as long as I can remember — and certainly long before I had the term for it — I’ve believed that creativity is combinatorial: Alive and awake to the world, we amass a collection of cross-disciplinary building blocks — knowledge, memories, bits of information, sparks of inspiration, and other existing ideas — that we then combine and recombine, mostly unconsciously, into something “new.” From this vast a... mais »
Axons and Dendrites creation
How neurons ‘decide’ to create axons or dendrites Finding could help improve therapies for spinal injuries and neurodegenerative diseases August 16, 2013 *[+]* UA researchers discovered that a neuron will form multiple axons as seen here when they blocked the short version of a signaling molecule from functioning (credit: Sara Parker/University of Arizona) University of Arizona scientists havediscovered an unknown mechanism that establishes polarity in developing nerve cells: the length of a signaling molecule. Understanding how nerve cells make connections is an important step in dev... mais »

Regulation of Human Emotion And Mood
Rines Brain Molecule Implicated In Regulating Human Emotion And Mood By News Staff | August 6th 2013 07:03 PM | 2 comments | Print | E-mail | Track Comments A RIKEN research team says that an enzyme called Rines regulates Monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), a major brain protein controlling emotion and mood, making it a potential drug target for treating depression. Monoamine oxidase A is an enzyme that breaks down serotonin, norephinephrine and dopamine, neurotransmitters well-known for their influence on emotion and mood. Nicknamed the "warrior gene", a variant of the MAOA gene has been as... mais »
Venous Ulcers
Ultrasound Band-Aid Heals Venous Ulcers A small clinical study showed promise for a new method of treating chronic wounds; an ultrasound applicator that can be worn like a band-aid. The applicator delivers low-frequency, low-intensity ultrasound directly to wounds, and was found to significantly accelerate healing in five patients with venous ulcers, which are caused when valves in the veins malfunction, causing blood to pool in the leg instead of returning to the heart. This pooling, called venous stasis, can cause proteins and cells in the vein to leak into the surrounding tissue ... mais »
