Very cool. A hopefully constructive criticism is that it might be a bit clearer to put the more ephemeral data points, e.g. vietnam and iraq, on the top of the stack so the longer term data points aren't so disrupted.

Inequality

Inequality could be lower than you think

But there is plenty to do to make economies fairer
Leaders Nov 28th 2019 edition
Even in a world of polarisation, fake news and social media, some beliefs remain universal, and central to today’s politics. None is more influential than the idea that inequality has risen in the rich world. People read about it in newspapers, hear about it from their politicians and feel it in their daily lives. This belief motivates populists, who say selfish metropolitan elites have pulled the ladder of opportunity away from ordinary people. It has given succour to the left, who propose ever more radical ways to redistribute wealth (see article). And it has caused alarm among business people, many of whom now claim to pursue a higher social purpose, lest they be seen to subscribe to a model of capitalism that everyone knows has failed.
In many ways the failure is real. Opportunities are restricted. The cost of university education in America has spiralled beyond the reach of many families. Across the rich world, as rents and house prices have soared, it has become harder to afford to live in the successful cities which contain the most jobs (see Free exchange). Meanwhile, the rusting away of old industries has concentrated poverty in particular cities and towns, creating highly visible pockets of deprivation. By some measures inequalities in health and life expectancy are getting worse./.../

Maneiras distintas de encarar a morte...

From From Here to Eternity
by Caitlin Doughty.

When a gray whale dies it is a feast for all:

"The grey whale is an impressive creature-fifty feet long and weighing over thirty-six tons, with formidable likes spanning ten feet.  A dozen miles off the coast of California, she emerges into view and exhales with a final, weakened puff. After sixty-five years, death has come for the great beast, and she hangs limp at the surface.

"Some whales begin to sink straightaway, but this particular whale will remain afloat. Inside the carcass, tissues and proteins are breaking down, organs are liquefying, and gases are building up -- they are filling the whale's blubbery outer casing, transforming her into a macabre balloon. If she were to be punctured in a single spot, the force of the pressurized gases would launch her mushy innards several yards from her body. But this whale's skin holds. Gases slip out slowly; our former cetacean deflates and begins her gradual descent to the sea floor below. Down, down she goes, traveling more than a mile, until at last the beast meets soft bottom./.../

Dementia

What Science Tells Us About Preventing Dementia

What Science Tells Us About Preventing Dementia
Anne Tergesen, The Wall Street Journal
There are no instant, miracle cures. But recent studies suggest we have more control over our cognitive health than we might think. It just takes some effort.

Serendiptia

A palavra deriva do alemão Schaden “dano, prejuízo” e Freude “alegria, prazer”.
Porque do sentimento tão frequente?

WOMEN OF IMPACT

By Intan Nurhati, Paleoclimate Scientist and Oceanographer
Gender equality is a collective goal, not confined to any place and time. National Geographic brings together stories of women warriors across generations in narrowing the gap of gender equality. Today, no country in the world has achieved gender equality. The Gender Gap Report reminds us of a 32% gender gap that remains to be closed globally. Gaps in educational attainment, as well as health and survival, are narrowing. Still, larger gaps remain in economic and political empowerment.

emotional intelligence

Alain de Botton on Existential Maturity and What Emotional Intelligence Really Means

“The emotionally intelligent person knows that they will only ever be mentally healthy in a few areas and at certain moments, but is committed to fathoming their inadequacies and warning others of them in good time, with apology and charm.”

Alain de Botton on Existential Maturity and What Emotional Intelligence Really Means
“Maturity is the ability to live fully and equally in multiple contexts,” poet and philosopher David Whyte wrote in one of his most beautiful meditations. A generation before him, Anaïs Nin took up the subject in her diary, which is itself a work of philosophy: “If you intensify and complete your subjective emotions, visions, you see their relation to others’ emotions. It is not a question of choosing between them, one at the cost of another, but a matter of completion, of inclusion, an encompassing, unifying, and integrating which makes maturity.” And yet emotional maturity is not something that happens unto us as a passive function of time. It is, as Toni Morrison well knew, “a difficult beauty, an intensely hard won glory” — the product of intentional character-sculpting, the slow and systematic chiseling away of our childish impulses for tantrums, for sulking, for instant self-gratification without regard for others, for weaponizing our feelings of shame, frustration, and loneliness. Like happiness — another life-skill we have miscategorized as a passive abstraction — it requires early education, consistent relearning, and unrelenting practice.
