101 Razões para Tomar Café

From: Darcy Lima

Is Time Real?

Is Time Real?

Written by Steve Nerlich
Time is an illusion caused by the passage of history (Douglas Adams 1952-2001).
The way that we deal with time is central to a major current schism in physics. Under classicNewtonian physics and also quantum mechanics – time is absolute, a universal metronome allowing you determine whether events occur simultaneously or in sequence. Under Einstein's physics, time is not absolute – simultaneity and sequence depend on who's looking. For Einstein, the speed of light (in a vacuum) is constant and time changes in whatever way is required to keep the speed of light constant from all frames of reference.

The frequency of nocturnal voiding declined by as much as 50%, and the voided volume of nocturnal urine decreased by as much as 40%. The initial period of uninterrupted sleep doubled or tripled across the range of desmopressin doses, as compared with placebo.

This is your brain on computers…

June 8, 2010 by RR
Yet most commentary can’t get beyond the individual (random [medical] gobbledeegook) aspect. Why don’t we try something completely different and give it a try.
As critical as this article (Hooked on Gadgets, and Paying a Mental Price) suggests the implications may be from multitasking, especially using multiple electronic devices and applications, it still emphasizes the individual effect.
The social and societal effects are utterly ignored.
The social determinants of health identifies the critical role of inequalities that exist across societies in determining population health states. It matters less how wealthy a nation, region, or state is than how that wealth is distributed between the people of that area./.../

Not just for a day or two, but 12 days. He finally saw it while sifting through old messages: a big company wanted to buy his Internet start-up.
“I stood up from my desk and said, ‘Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God,’ ” Mr. Campbell said. “It’s kind of hard to miss an e-mail like that, but I did.”
The message had slipped by him amid an electronic flood: two computer screens alive with e-mail, instant messages, online chats, a Web browser and the computer code he was writing. (View an interactive panorama of Mr. Campbell's workstation.)/.../

An old, cheap gout drug may be an effective treatment option for patients with chronic stable angina, according to results of a small placebo-controlled study.
Exercise tolerance tests revealed that patients randomized to high dose allopurinol for six weeks significantly improved time to ST depression (P=0.002), total exercise time (P=0.003), and time to chest pain (P=0.001) compared with placebo, Awsan Noman, MB, of the University of Dundee in Scotland reported online in The Lancet./.../

caution for primary-prevention aspirin

New statement urges caution for primary-prevention aspirin in diabetics

JUNE 3, 2010 | Michael O'Riordan
Chapel HillNC - A new scientific statement on the use of aspirin for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes recommends that low-dose aspirin is "reasonable" in those with no history of vascular disease but who are at an increased 10-year risk of cardiovascular events [1].
The new recommendations, from a joint statement of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), theAmerican Heart Association (AHA), and the American College of Cardiology (ACC), essentially call for tighter criteria for aspirin use in the diabetic population. The organizations state that only men older than 50 and women older than 60 who have one or more additional major risk factors should be treated with aspirin for primary prevention of cardiovascular events./.../

What's Wrong with the World Cup Ball?

Adidas pays big bucks to be an official World Cup sponsor, which gives it the right to make the official match ball for this year's event — and the chance to sell a zillion of them worldwide. This World Cup ball is called Jabulani, which means "to celebrate" in the Bantu language of Zulu, one of the official languages of South Africa, but some players are hardly cheering. The level of complaining about the new ball is so loud that perhaps Adidas should rename the thing. What's the Zulu word for gripe?/.../

Dear Editor,
As a medical doctor studying, since 1990, the role of influenza as a determinant of the 20th century rise in CHD mortality, I welcome the publication in this journal of other papers also suggesting an association between the 1918 influenza pandemic and CVD occurrence.1
While our target birth cohorts and methodology were different, the underlining idea behind our studies was the same: that influenza priming would have a role in the differential birth cohort distribution of CHD and CVD events later in life./.../

NEW ORLEANS -- Poor mental health may result in physical problems for relocated survivors of Hurricane Katrina, researchers reported here.

A group of survivors who relocated to Oklahoma not only had more mental health problems but had higher resting heart rates and worse heart rate variability -- risk factors for heart disease -- than matched controls, according to Phebe Tucker, MD, of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Oklahoma City, Okla., who has researched similar issues in survivors of the Oklahoma City bombing./.../

slogan do Dia Mundial do Ambiente 2010 “Muitas Espécies.
