Supernova Superstar: The Most Distant and Important One Yet

Astronomers can make a surprising amount of hay over relatively small observations. That faint hiss in your AM radio that just seems like spotty reception? It’s actually the cosmic background radiation pouring in from all over the universe. That subtle red-shift in the light from distant stars? Turns out the universe is expanding.
Now investigators may be ready to turn a small discovery into big science again. Researchers at the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe in Japan have discovered an exploding star known as a type 1a supernova at the edge of the cosmos, and while 1a’s aren’t that common — stars like the sun don’t blow up that way, for example — they’re not all that uncommon either. Still, this particular 1a could help solve the mysteries of both dark matter and dark energy — huge stuff by any measure — and all thanks to a single optical illusion that has Albert Einstein‘s fingerprints all over it./.../

(Reuters) - Heavy use of the world's most popular herbicide, Roundup, could be linked to a range of health problems and diseases, including Parkinson's, infertility and cancers, according to a new study.
The peer-reviewed report, published last week in the scientific journal Entropy, said evidence indicates that residues of "glyphosate," the chief ingredient in Roundup weed killer, which is sprayed over millions of acres of crops, has been found in food.
Those residues enhance the damaging effects of other food-borne chemical residues and toxins in the environment to disrupt normal body functions and induce disease, according to the report, authored by Stephanie Seneff, a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Anthony Samsel, a retired science consultant from Arthur D. Little, Inc. Samsel is a former private environmental government contractor as well as a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists.
"Negative impact on the body is insidious and manifests slowly over time as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout the body," the study says./.../

THURSDAY, April 25 (HealthDay News) -- Medications taken by people with bipolar disorder may actually be nudging hundreds of genes that direct the brain to behave more normally, according to new research.
The study suggests that antipsychotic drugs activate a wide range of genes, changing their function, said lead author Dr. Melvin McInnis.
"A gene's activity in any given cell will vary depending on what it's exposed to," said McInnis, a professor of bipolar disorder and depression at the School of Medicine at the University of Michigan.
It's not often that scientists stumble upon something in research that they totally weren't expecting to see. "It was a major surprise to us that people treated with an antipsychotic [medication] had changes in the gene expression pattern," McInnis said.
The findings could help point the way to new gene-targeted and stem cell therapies, and provide valuable insight into what causes manic-depressive mood swings, he added.
However, a genetics expert not connected to the study was more cautious about drawing implications from its findings./.../

Suppressing protein may stem Alzheimer's disease process

Runaway regulator clogs removal of toxic debris – NIH funded study

Scientists funded by the National Institutes of Health have discovered a potential strategy for developing treatments to stem the disease process in Alzheimer’s disease. It’s based on unclogging removal of toxic debris that accumulates in patients’ brains, by blocking activity of a little-known regulator protein called CD33.
“Too much CD33 appears to promote late-onset Alzheimer’s by preventing support cells from clearing out toxic plaques, key risk factors for the disease,” explained Rudolph Tanzi, Ph.D. External Web Site Policy, of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University, a grantee of the NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and National Institute on Aging (NIA). “Future medications that impede CD33 activity in the brain might help prevent or treat the disorder.”
Tanzi and colleagues report on their findings April 25, 2013 in the journal Neuron.
Variation in the CD33 gene turned up as one of four prime suspects in the largest genome-wide dragnet of Alzheimer’s-affected families, reported by Tanzi and colleagues in 2008. The gene was known to make a protein that regulates the immune system, but its function in the brain remained elusive. To discover how it might contribute to Alzheimer’s, the researchers brought to bear human genetics, biochemistry and human brain tissue, mouse and cell-based experiments.

They found over-expression of CD33 in support cells, called microglia, in postmortem brains from patients who had late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of the illness. The more CD33 protein on the cell surface of microglia, the more beta-amyloid proteins and plaques — damaging debris — had accumulated in their brains. Moreover, the researchers discovered that brains of people who inherited a version of the CD33 gene that protected them from Alzheimer’s conspicuously showed reduced amounts of CD33 on the surface of microglia and less beta-amyloid.
Brain levels of beta-amyloid and plaques were also markedly reduced in mice engineered to under-express or lack CD33. Microglia cells in these animals were more efficient at clearing out the debris, which the researchers traced to levels of CD33 on the cell surface.
Evidence also suggested that CD33 works in league with another Alzheimer’s risk gene in microglia to regulate inflammation in the brain.
The study results — and those of a recent rat study that replicated many features of the human illness — add support to the prevailing theory that accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques are hallmarks of Alzheimer’s pathology. They come at a time of ferment in the field, spurred by otherrecent contradictory evidence External Web Site Policy suggesting that these presumed culprits might instead play a protective role.
Since increased CD33 activity in microglia impaired beta-amyloid clearance in late onset Alzheimer’s, Tanzi and colleagues are now searching for agents that can cross the blood-brain barrier and block it./.../

INTRODUCTION


The International Labour Organisation celebrates the World day for Safety and Health at Work on the 28th of April, with a theme for 2013 of prevention of occupational diseases (www.ilo.org). Labour unions worldwide also commemorate workers who have died at work or as a result of exposure at work on this day.
Fortunately, many statistics indicate that workplace health and safety have improved over time. Occupational injury rates in the US show a steady decline over the past 100 years, and exposure to chemical agents in the US and Europe has also decreased considerably in the past forty odd years.[1] However, uncertainty about what specific interventions led to these improvements makes it difficult to select appropriate interventions in countries where rates remain high. Moreover, there are still occupational health statistics that are not favourable at all. Noise-induced hearing loss, work-related musculoskeletal disorders, stress-related complaints and skin disorders remain very prevalent. Other less prevalent conditions (for example HIV and Hepatitis C) have extremely serious consequences, and so protecting workers from these risks remains a high priority.
The Cochrane Occupational Safety & Health Review Group has selected a number of recent Cochrane Reviews that explore the evidence for interventions aimed at preventing occupational diseases. These can be used by employers to develop preventive policy and practice and achieve tangible health benefits for their employees.

Born Apr. 15, 17o7, in Basel, Switzerland, he was the son of a Calvinist minister who started college at the University of Basel at 13 and earned his master’s degree in philosophy by age 16. While Frederick the Great invited him to join the Berlin Academy at one point, he spent most of his career working in St. Petersburg, Russia.Today’s Google Doodle celebrates the 306th birthday of Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler (1707-1783), who made important contributions to the study of geometry, algebra, calculus, mechanics and number theory.

Euler was one of the most published mathematicians of all time, penning more than 800 papers (many in Latin) before his death at age 76. In fact, he produced nearly half of his work after going completely blind at age 59. Most notably, he wrote about the significance of “e,” an irrational number and the base of natural logarithms that is approximately equal to 2.7183. Readers of the journal Mathematical Intelligencer voted his equation “ei(pi) + 1 = 0″ the “single most beautiful equation in all of mathematics” in a 1988 poll.
Euler may also be the father of sudoku, for he created the Latin Square, “arrangements of groups of numbers in grids that do not repeat vertically or horizontally,” according to a 2005 Los Angeles Times article.
He was also known for having an amazing memory and reportedly could recite every word of Virgil’s Aeneid. 
Euler worked furiously up to the end of his life; on the day he died of a cerebral hemorrhage on Sep. 18, 1783, he had been calculating how high hot-air balloons can rise, as well as the orbit of the planet Uranus, which had recently been discovered.
“Euler’s work is at the root of almost every equation, formula, theorem or other relationship used in mathematics, from the simplest to the highest levels,” Afred S. Posamentier, former dean of the School of Education at the City University of New York, wrote in a Newsday editorial published on the occasion of Euler’s 300th birthday in 2007. Ronald S. Calinger, mathematics historian at the Catholic University of America, argued in the Washington Post that Euler is one of “the four greatest mathematical scientists of all time,” alongside Archimedes, Isaac Newton, and Carl Friedrich Gauss.

The world is facing incredibly serious natural resource and environmental challenges: Climate change, fresh water depletion, ocean over-fishing, deforestation, air and water pollution, the struggle to feed a planet of billions.
All of these challenges are exacerbated by ever rising demand — over the next 40 years estimates are that demand for fresh water will rise 50%, demand for food will rise 70%, and demand for energy will nearly double — all in the same period that we need to tackle climate change, depletion of rivers and aquifers, and deforestation.
One view of these looming threats is that we’ve exhausted planet’s resources. We’ve overshot the planet’s carrying capacity. Economic growth — the root problem driving our growing consumption and pollution — has to end. Indeed, the global economy may even need to shrink to avoid complete ecological disaster. The Solution: Growing the Pie
As part one of this series showed, we are up against incredible challenges: feeding a world with a rapidly growing appetite, the continuing loss of the world’s precious forests, the ongoing collapse of fish species in the oceans, the rapid depletion of our fresh water resources, and the over-arching threat of climate change, which makes all others far worse.
Ending growth isn’t a realistic option. Billions of people in the developing world want access to more resources,deserve those resources as much as those of us in the rich world do, and need them in order to rise out of poverty. Growth won’t end without a struggle. And that struggle could turn violent, as it has in the past.
There’s only one acceptable way out of our current predicament. And that is to grow the total pie of resources available to the world’s inhabitants. And a close look at the numbers and at the human history of innovation suggests this is possible./.../
