Moacyr Scliar

Moacyr Scliar was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1937. He is the author of 68 books, published in 20 countries. The recipient of numerous Brazilian and international prizes, member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, Scliar is the author of, among others,The Centaur in the Garden (named one of the 100 Greatest Works of Modern Jewish Literature, by the National Yiddish Book Center of the USA) and Max and the Cats (which became the centre of controversy when Yann Martel used its premise for his novel The Life of Pl). Scliar writes (also about medical subjects) for newspapers and magazines in Brazil and abroad; his works have been adapted for theatre, television, and films. He was a visiting professor at Brown University and the University of Texas in Austin. He is a public health physician, with a PhD in public health. He teaches public health at the Federal Faculty of Medical Sciences in Porto Alegre./.../
