In 1836, the library of the U.S. Army Surgeon General consisted of a small collection of medical books on one shelf. Today, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the world's largest biomedical library. With some 14 million items in more than 150 languages, it is the worldwide leader in trusted medical and health information and innovation.
But this unique library is about much more than books. Every day it delivers trillions of bytes of data crucial to the lives of millions everywhere. NLM–designed databases and tools lead people to helpful medical literature and health information; help researchers study genes and their role in disease; provide emergency responders with critical information on hazardous substances, and much, much more.

Today marks the start of Open Access Week (18-24 October), an annual event that provides the opportunity to learn about the benefits of open access materials in academic and research settings.
The following is taken from the Open Access Week website: "Open access to information - the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and re-use those results as you need - has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted. It has direct and widespread implications for academia, medicine, science, industry, and for society as a whole.
Open Access (OA) has the potential to maximize research investments, increase the exposure and use of published research, facilitate the ability to conduct research across available literature, and enhance the overall advancement of scholarship. Research funding agencies, academic institutions, researchers and scientists, teachers, students, and members of the general public are supporting a move towards Open Access in increasing numbers every year. Open Access Week is a key opportunity for all members of the community to take action to keep this momentum moving forward."/.../

It looks like Amazon is extending its e-reading platform to include short works and digital pamphlets. Today, Amazon islaunching Kindle Singles, which are Kindle books that are in the company’s words, “twice the length of a New Yorker feature or as much as a few chapters of a typical book.” Generally, Amazon characterized Kindle Singles as 10,000 to 30,000 words (roughly 30 to 90 pages).
Amazon says that Kindle Singles will have their own section in the Kindle Store, which currently has over 700,000 books, and will be priced much less than a typical book (although Amazon didn’t reveal a range of pricing for the new format). Like standard e-books on the platform, Kindle Singles can be read on the Kindle, Kindle 3G, Kindle DX, iPad, iPod touch, iPhone, Mac, PC, BlackBerry, and Android-based devices.
It sounds like anyone can submit a story or piece to be included as a Kindle Single, and Amazon is using the announcement as a “call to serious writers, thinkers, scientists, business leaders, historians, politicians and publishers” to submit writings. As Amazon writes in the release: Singles are a “perfect, natural length to lay out a single killer idea, well researched, well argued and well illustrated—whether it’s a business lesson, a political point of view, a scientific argument, or a beautifully crafted essay on a current event.”
This new format is is important because Kindle Singles opens up a market for new authors. Singles gives bloggers and writers out there who don’t have time to write a book the opportunity to publish a pamphlet or shorter work. And it seems fairly easy for writer to publish these works. Amazon will work directly with publishers and writers to publish Kindle Singles. Amazon says that “Any rights holder can use the already popular Kindle Digital Text Platform (DTP) to self-publish work in the Kindle Store, and this include Kindle Singles.”
A few weeks ago, Amazon released “Kindle for the Web”, which enables people to read and share digital book samples in their browsers without the need to install or download anything.

O que é a b-on?

A Biblioteca do Conhecimento Online (b-on) disponibiliza o acesso ilimitado e permanente nas instituições de investigação e do ensino superior aos textos integrais de mais de 16.750 publicações científicas internacionais de 16 editoras, através de assinaturas negociadas a nível nacional com essas editoras.

Esta biblioteca começou a ser planeada em 1999, altura em que na programação do Quadro Comunitário de Apoio foi referida por "Biblioteca Nacional de C e T em Rede". Em 2000, o OCT – Observatório das Ciências e Tecnologias procedeu a um levantamento exaustivo das assinaturas de revistas científicas de todas as instituições portuguesas para preparar as negociações com as editoras, em 2001 foi disponibilizada a importante ferramenta de bibliografia científica Web of Knowledge , do Instituto de Informação Científica de Filadélfia, que permitiu o acesso a títulos, resumos e informação de citações e impactos de cerca de 8.500 revistas, incluindo registos desde 1945. Também em 2001 foi iniciada pelo OCT a negociação com as principais editoras.

A disponibilização dos textos integrais das primeiras 3.500 publicações, de 6 editoras, foi assegurada em Março de 2004. Em 2005 a biblioteca passou a disponibilizar os textos integrais de mais de 16.750 publicações.
Acompanhamento, coordenação e financiamento ...
O acompanhamento e a coordenação da Biblioteca do Conhecimento Online são assegurados pela UMIC – Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento, IP  sendo a respectiva infraestrutura técnica, o apoio aos utilizadores,designadamente na área da formação, e a relação com os editores e restantes fornecedores de conteúdos assegurada pela FCCN – Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional.
Desde o ano de 2004 que  a b-on tem vindo a ser financiada pelas seguintes entidades:  POSC - Programa Operacional Sociedade do Conhecimento, Instituições utilizadoras e UMIC. As percentagens de comparticipação de cada uma destas entidades sofreram alterações ao longo dos anos, de acordo com os modelos de financiamento que foram sendo aprovados. No que respeita ao financiamento do POSC, este terminou no final do primeiro semestre de 2009.
