Where Do Humans Live? A New Map Offers More Detail Than Ever Before.

One of the important goals of geography is to assess the human presence and its impact across the planet. A good starting point is to understand where humans live.
That’s easier said than done. The global population is around 7 billion, with about half living in cities. Many companies have mapped modern cities and smaller settlements with enthusiasm. Companies such as Google and Microsoft, and even the open-source organization OpenStreetMaps, have comprehensive maps of many areas of the world.
But this work tends to focus on the developed world, where potential profits are greatest, and on urban areas where the concentration of people is highest. What’s more, commercial maps vary in resolution and are based on commercial imagery that is hugely expensive to access.

World Population Growth

One of the big lessons from the demographic history of countries is that population explosions are temporary. For many countries the demographic transition has already ended, and as the global fertility rate has now halved we know that the world as a whole is approaching the end of rapid population growth.
This visualization presents this big overview of the global demographic transition – with the very latest data from the UN Population Division just published.
As we explore at the beginning of the entry on population growth, the global population grew only very slowly up to 1700 – only 0.04% per year. In the many millennia up to that point in history very high mortality of children counteracted high fertility. The world was in the first stage of the demographic transition.
Once health improved and mortality declined things changed quickly. Particularly over the course of the 20th century: Over the last 100 years global population more than quadrupled. As we see in the chart, the rise of the global population got steeper and steeper and you have just lived through the steepest increase of that curve. This also means that your existence is a tiny part of the reason why that curve is so steep.
The 7-fold increase of the world population over the course of two centuries amplified humanity’s impact on the natural environment. To provide space, food, and resources for a large world population in a way that is sustainable into the distant future is without question one of the large, serious challenges for our generation. We should not make the mistake of underestimating the task ahead of us. Yes, I expect new generations to contribute, but for now it is upon us to provide for them. Population growth is still fast: Every year 140 million are born and 58 million die – the difference is the number of people that we add to the world population in a year: 82 million.
Where do we go from here?
In red you see the annual population growth rate (that is, the percentage change in population per year) of the global population. It peaked around half a century ago. Peak 
population growth 
was reached in 1968 with an annual growth of 2.1%. Since then the increase of the world population has slowed and today grows by just over 1% per year. This slowdown of population growth was not only predictable, but predicted. Just as expected by demographers (here), the world as a whole is experiencing the closing of a massive demographic transition.
This chart also shows how the United Nations envision the slow ending of the global demographic transition. As population growth continues to decline, the curve representing the world population is getting less and less steep. By the end of the century – when global population growth will have fallen to 0.1% according to the UN’s projection – the world will be very close to the end of the demographic transition. It is hard to know the population dynamics beyond 2100; it will depend upon the fertility rate and as we discuss in our entry on fertility rates here fertility is first falling with development – and then rising with development. The question will be whether it will rise above an average 2 children per woman.
The world enters the last phase of the demographic transition and this means we will not repeat the past. The global population has quadrupled over the course of the 20th century, but it will not double anymore over the course of this century.
The world population will reach a size, which compared to humanity’s history, will be extraordinary; if the UN projections are accurate (they have a good track record), the world population will have increased more than 10-fold over the span of 250 years.
We are on the way to a new balance. The big global demographic transition that the world entered more than two centuries ago is then coming to an end: This new equilibrium is different from the one in the past when it was the very high mortality that kept population growth in check. In the new balance it will be low fertility keeps population changes small.

There has been tremendous growth in the size of the world’s population in the last half century. Global population was around 3 billion in 1960. By 1987, in less than three decades, it had surpassed 5 billion and there were around 7.6 billion people in the world in 2018.
This growth varies greatly across regions. Since 1960, the largest relative growth has taken place in Sub-Saharan Africa where the population expanded from 227 million in 1960 to more than 1 billion in 2018—a nearly fivefold increase. The second largest growth over the period can be seen in Middle East and North Africa, where the population increased more than 4 times, from 105 million to 449 million.
It is projected that the world’s population will continue to grow and will reach nearly 10 billion by 2050. While in other regions growth will slow significantly, in Sub-Saharan Africa, the population is projected to double by 2050, an expansion of nearly 10 times relative to 1960, from 227 million to 2.2 billion./.../

In 1968, the best-seller “The Population Bomb,” written by Paul and Anne Ehrlich (but credited solely to Paul) warned of the perils of overpopulation: mass starvation, societal upheaval, environmental deterioration. The book was criticized at the time for painting an overly dark picture of the future. But while not all of the Ehrlich’s dire predictions have come to pass, the world’s population has doubled since then, to over seven billion, straining the planet’s resources and heating up our climate. Can the earth continue to support an ever-increasing number of humans? On its 50th anniversary, we revisit “The Population Bomb” with Paul Ehrlich.

As comparações entre China (1,4 bilhão de habitantes) e Índia (1,32 bilhão), após quatro décadas de políticas demográficas radicalmente distintas, são inevitáveis. Na faixa da população economicamente ativa – 15 a 60 anos – estima-se que em 2040 a média etária dos indianos será de 35 anos, contra 44 da envelhecida população chinesa. Com a economia em ruínas após a revolução cultural de Mao Tsé Tung, no fim da década de 1970 Deng Xiaoping, o criador do capitalismo de Estado chinês, implantou a política do filho único (vide http://mundoseculoxxi.com.br/2018/02/05/china-um-ou-dois-filhos/0) que já evitou 400 milhões de nascimentos. Como seus efeitos se mantém no longo prazo, estima-se que até 2060 o total, principalmente de mulheres, chegará a 1 bilhão de pessoas não nascidas. Desde 2015 a aposta do governo é de uma nova explosão demográfica graças à atual política de 2 filhos por casal. Na prática, em 2016 houve um aumento de 8% no número de nascimentos acrescentando mais 1,3 milhão à população total, mas mesmo com o aporte previsto de 30 milhões de pessoas nos próximos trinta anos o país permanecerá abaixo da taxa de reposição que é de 2,1 filhos por mulher./.../

This year we focus on the state of the world's youth—the 16 percent of the global population between 15 and 24 years old. PRB has produced three new videos based on our wall chart, "Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: Data and Trends, Update 2017. The videos, customized for social media, explore new data from Indonesia, differences between national and regional prevalence levels, and best practices for assessing progress across generations.

The videos aim to expand understanding of key data issues in FGM/C research, including the importance of looking beyond national prevalence to identify hotspots or areas within a country where FGM/C is widely practiced, analyzing change over time by comparing older and younger cohorts rather than changes in overall prevalence, and understanding the various questions and data gaps that are raised by newly available data in Indonesia. Featuring compelling photos, music, and animated text, maps, and data charts, the videos are primarily intended for digital distribution and viewing, though they can also be included in presentations or shown during events or meetings.
