Terrorism is and will always be out there as we do not live in a world depicted in the movie Minority Report where crimes can be prevented by foreseeing them. We cannot and we do not want to supervise people’s lives as that would be the death of privacy. Also, disruptive technologies not only enhance the opportunities of true visionaries who want to make the world a better place but also the dreams of the bad guys ready for such dreadful acts as bioterrorism. We need to talk about it.
Biological sabotage campaigns and anthrax attacks: bioterrorism in the past
Why the hospital of the future will be your own home
11:36 minutes · TED@UPS
Nobody likes going to the hospital, whether it's because of the logistical challenges of getting there, the astronomical costs of procedures or the alarming risks of complications like antibiotic-resistant bacteria. But what if we could get the lifesaving care provided by hospitals in our own homes? Health care futurist Niels van Namen shows how advances in technology are making home care a cheaper, safer and more accessible alternative to hospital stays.
Gauchos, remember !!!
In the world’s most famous thought experiment, physicist Erwin Schrödinger described how a cat in a box could be in an uncertain predicament. (AnatolyTiplyashin/Getty)
A thought experiment that replaces the cat in Schrödinger’s imaginary box with physicists doing experiments has shocking implications. In the original, the peculiar rules of quantum theory meant that the cat could be both dead and alive, until the box was opened and the cat’s state measured. But in the latest version, different experimenters can reach opposite conclusions about what the physicist in the box has measured. This means that quantum theory contradicts itself. “I think this is a whole new level of weirdness,” says theoretical physicist Matthew Leifer.
The Human Genome Project was meant to change everything — but 15 years later, most research still tends to focus on the same old genes. Scientists applied machine learning to an exhaustive list of publications to determine the factors that predict when scientists will choose to study a particular gene. They found it’s partly due to the gene’s importance to human health, but a lot of it simply comes down to how easy the gene was to investigate in the 1980s and 1990s. “The 16 percent of genes that were known in 1991 still accounted for half of all biomedical papers in 2015,” notes The Atlantic, “and a quarter (27 percent) have never been the focus of a scientific paper.”

Our World in Data presents the empirical evidence on global development in entries dedicated to specific topics.
This blog post draws on data and research discussed in our entry on World Population Growth.
Our mission here at Our World in Data is to show how living conditions around the world are changing.
To show global data it is convenient to use a map. But despite the popularity and familiarity of world maps, they can mislead our understanding of how living conditions around the world are changing. They are made for a different purpose; geographical maps show us where the world’s land masses are and where country borders run. They don’t show us where the people are.
If we want to show where the world’s people are we need a population cartogram, a geographical presentation of the world where the size of the countries are not drawn according to the distribution of land, but according to the distribution of people.
So I spent the last few weekends making this cartogram for the world population in 2018.
For decades, some of the atomic matter in the universe had not been located. Recent papers reveal where it’s been hiding.

ASTRONOMERS HAVE FINALLY found the last of the missing universe. It’s been hiding since the mid-1990s, when researchers decided to inventory all the “ordinary” matter in the cosmos—stars and planets and gas, anything made out of atomic parts. (This isn’t “dark matter,” which remains a wholly separate enigma.) They had a pretty good idea of how much should be out there, based on theoretical studies of how matter was created during the Big Bang. Studies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB)—the leftover light from the Big Bang—would confirm these initial estimates./.../
A new, comprehensive data analysis study challenges existing paradigms in psychology relating to personality types. Researchers report there appear to be four major clusters of personality types.
Average Average people are high in neuroticism and extraversion, while low in openness. “I would expect that the typical person would be in this cluster,” said Martin Gerlach, a postdoctoral fellow in Amaral’s lab and the paper’s first author. Females are more likely than males to fall into the Average type.ReservedThe Reserved type is emotionally stable, but not open or neurotic. They are not particularly extraverted but are somewhat agreeable and conscientious.Role ModelsRole Models score low in neuroticism and high in all the other traits. The likelihood that someone is a role model increases dramatically with age. “These are people who are dependable and open to new ideas,” Amaral said. “These are good people to be in charge of things. In fact, life is easier if you have more dealings with role models.” More women than men are likely to be role models.Self-CenteredSelf-Centered people score very high in extraversion and below average in openness, agreeableness and conscientiousness. “These are people you don’t want to hang out with,” Revelle said. There is a very dramatic decrease in the number of self-centered types as people age, both with women and men.
Northwestern University researchers have sifted through data from more than 1.5 million questionnaire respondents and found at least four distinct clusters of personality types. NeuroscienceNews.com image is credited to Northwestern University.
The new research combined an alternative computational approach with data from four questionnaires with more than 1.5 million respondents from around the world obtained from John Johnson’s IPIP-NEO with 120 and 300 items, respectively, the myPersonality project and the BBC Big Personality Test datasets. The questionnaires, developed by the research community over the decades, have between 44 and 300 questions. People voluntarily take the online quizzes attracted by the opportunity to receive feedback about their own personality. These data are now being made available to other researchers for independent analyses.
Some bacteria, like Listeria monocytogenes, can generate electricity. These bacteria transport electrons through the cell wall into the surrounding environments, with help from flavin molecules (shown in yellow).

There may not be butterflies in your stomach, but there are certainly sparks in your gut.
In the lab, Portnoy and his team first grew a batch of Listeria monocytogenes, a species of bacteria, that we often eat that sometimes causes an infection called listeriosis. This type of food poisoning typically is most dangerous for those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women (it can cause miscarriages), newborns and elderly people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Researchers say parabens and other chemicals found in common cosmetic products may negatively impact a woman's hormone levels, increasing the risk for certain diseases.
“What we should take away from this study is that we may need to be careful about the chemicals in the beauty and personal care products we use,” explains Pollack. “We have early indicators that chemicals such as parabens may increase estrogen levels. If this finding is confirmed by additional research, it could have implications for estrogen dependent diseases such as breast cancer.”
