By AUDREY McAVOY :[image: Image: LkCa 15 b] updated 10/20/2011 11:31:08 AM ET HONOLULU — Astronomers have captured the first direct image of a planet being born. Adam Kraus, of the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy, said the planet is being formed out of dust and gas circling a 2-milion-year-old star about 450 light years from Earth. The planet itself, based on scientific models of how planets form, is estimated to have started taking shape about 50,000 to 100,000 years ago. Called LkCa 15 b, it's the youngest planet ever observed. The previous record holder was about ... mais »

Found: A Watery Solar System Being Born — and Clues to Earth's Creation By JEFFREY KLUGER Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011 An artist's rendering illustrates an icy planet-forming disk around a young star called TW Hydrae, in the constellation Hydra NASA / JPL / Caltech If E.T. is out there, it may be a lot easier to find him than we thought — mostly because there are a lot more places for him to live. Scientists looking for life (or at least earthlike life) have always obeyed a simple rule: follow the water. Biology is a wet process, after all — and generally the wetter the better. Heart and Brain Surgery — Never Gonna Happen By TERRI POUS Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 - BACK - NEXT - 9 of 10 CHARLES REX ARBOGAST / AP The average human lifespan is significantly longer now than it was in the 19th century, and we have modern practices like heart and brain surgery partially to thank for that.
