Some are treasures I have discovered in and restored from forgotten public domain books. Others are original illustrations by friends and collaborators. Nearly all have a charitable component, with a portion of the proceeds going to a relevant nonprofit. (For instance, Art Young's s... mais »

Science
Science is deeply imaginative: why is this treated as a secret? My latest book, *The Poetry and Music of Science *(2019), starts with my experiences of visiting schools and working with sixth-form pupils in general-studies classes. These students, aged 17-18, would tell me that they just didn’t see in science any room for their own imagination or creativity. Not just on one occasion but repeatedly I heard this from young people bright enough to have succeeded at any subject to which they set their minds. ******************** Einstein did of course have something to say on the matter.... mais »

The village kids call you *danda*, or stick. In time, you grow stronger. You become an avid amateur runner. Unable to attend school or read, you begin working alongside your father on the farm. Eventually you marry, start a family and farm of your own./.../

The pain and glory of ageing - Desmond O'Neill Published:September 14, 2019DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/S0140-6736(19)32089-6 Cinematic reflection on ageing is often about the extremes of life, such as in Pixar's *Up, The Company of Strangers* by Cynthia Scott, and Michael Haneke's *Amour*. But the transition from middle age to early old age is also a key time for reflection, recalibration, and refocus of the meaning of life and reconciliation of suffering, mistakes, and successes. These themes feature in the latest film by Pedro Almodóvar. *Pain and Glory* is his 21st crea... mais »

sovereignty of statehood
[image: What Is the Newest Country in the World?] *DEMYSTIFIED* What Is the Newest Country in the World? There are four major benchmarks generally held as standards for determining the sovereignty of statehood: having a permanent population, having defined territorial boundaries, having a government, and having an ability to enter into agreements with other states. These benchmarks being met, however, does not automatically guarantee recognition as a legitimately recognized, independent country. complicating factors are often resistance from the country from which an entity wishes t... mais »

healthier elderhood

Hospital and Social determinants
Hospitals’ Obligations to Address Social Determinants of Health Hannah R. Sullivan Citation - - Abstract Federal health care reform has expanded medical insurance to millions of people, altering the role that hospitals play in improving community health. However, current federal and state community benefit policy is an ineffective tool for ensuring that hospitals address the social determinants of health afflicting their communities. Policy shifts and other incentives that promote improved population health outcomes can encourage health care organizations to do the same.
