Escrita, Leitura e Inclusão Digital

ESCRITA, LEITURA E INCLUSÃO DIGITAL

DINO DEL PINO

SINOPSE

LOS ANGELES -- Men with lower than normal testosterone appear to have higher fasting insulin levels, but researchers cautioned against overtreatment because men with high testosterone had an adverse blood lipid profile.
Men with low testosterone had insulin measurements of about 6.3 microIU/mL compared with about 5.0 microIU/mL for men with normal testosterone (P=0.003) and about 4 microIU/mL for men with high testosterone (P=0.01), according to Margaret Groves, M.Phil, M.Ed, a researcher with ZRT Laboratories in Beaverton, Ore./.../

A cure for the common cold?

Model of the virus disposal system used by the cell to get rid of unwanted material (LMB)
Landmark research led by Dr. Leo James from the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge UK has discovered that antibodies can fight viruses from within infected cells.
This finding transforms the previous scientific understanding of our immunity to viral diseases like the common cold and gastroenteritis. It also gives scientists a different set of rules that pave the way to the next generation of antiviral drugs.
Viruses are mankind’s biggest killer, responsible for twice as many deaths each year as cancer, yet they are among the hardest of all diseases to treat. Previously scientists believed that antibodies could only reduce infection by attacking viruses outside cells and also by blocking their entry into cells.

LONDON | Mon Nov 1, 2010 10:23am EDT
(Reuters) - Alcohol is a more dangerous drug than both crack and heroin when the combined harms to the user and to others are assessed, British scientists said Monday.
Presenting a new scale of drug harm that rates the damage to users themselves and to wider society, the scientists rated alcohol the most harmful overall and almost three times as harmful as cocaine or tobacco.
According to the scale, devised by a group of scientists including Britain's Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs (ISCD) and an expert adviser to the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), heroin and crack cocaine rank as the second and third most harmful drugs./.../

Where Health Starts: A New Way to Talk

Where Health Starts: A New Way to Talk About the Social Determinants of Health
New Messaging Guide Shares Best Practices and Language to Communicate More Effectively
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Nov 1, 2010

In a recent survey of people interested in our work, almost two-thirds indicated that they experienced challenges in communicating about social determinants of health to their audiences. From an extensive research and message development process, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's (RWJF) Vulnerable Populations Portfolio has created a new frame for talking about this important but often misunderstood aspect of our health. These findings have helped RWJF communicate more effectively about our work resulting in the development of a messaging guide entitled A New Way to Talk About the Social Determinants of Health.

We recently shared this messaging guide during a webinar with more than 3,500 registered participants. A post-event survey found that nearly three-quarters of the participants plan to use this research and messaging best practices in their own communications.

This new frame has incredible implications for everyone who works at the intersection of where health starts. From showing how to more compellingly frame the idea of the social determinants of health, to sharing best practices in language and how best to use facts to fight fiction, we hope this research and the way we’ve applied it will be helpful to you.

Social Determinants of Health White Paper
Social determinants of health (SDH) refers to the complex, integrated, and overlapping social structures and economic systems that include social and physical environments and health services. Addressing such factors are critical to the success of public health programs; to that end, last month, NCHHSTP published a white paper on the importance of addressing social determinants of health in our work.

The purpose of the white paper is to advance a holistic approach to the design of our public health programs to improve the health of communities and increase their opportunities for healthy living. It includes recommendations for promoting health equity and addressing social determinants in six critical public health functions and recommendations for partners interested in incorporating this approach locally. NCHHSTP is committed to promoting awareness, engagement, and action on the many factors that can affect the health of all of us; to addressing these factors in our policy, practice, and research activities; and to expanding effective partnerships to address SDH.

Health care is primarily about people-to-people interactions. It is about understanding, diagnosis, physical contact, communication, and, ultimately, providing care. By bringing people together, telecommunication technologies have the potential to improve both the quality of and access to health care in the remotest areas of the developing world. Telemedicine offers solutions for emergency medical assistance, long-distance consultation, administration and logistics, supervision and quality assurance, and education and training for healthcare professionals and providers.
This book aims to redress the relative lack of published information on successful telehealth solutions in the developing world. It presents real-life stories from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. It is rich in practical experience and will be of interest to health professionals, development workers, and e-health and telehealth proponents interested in learning about, or contributing to the implementation of, appropriate solutions for 80% of the world’s population.
